Dopamine

shot June and August 2022, DOP Moritz Plescher

Dopamine was our first music video production that we made for ourselves. It was very helpful that we had already gained some experience during university and that Luwi had worked on other people's projects. But two key elements added tremendous value to the production. The first was the talent and hard work of Moritz, with whom Luwi had worked briefly at a media agency. Moritz took the train to Sweden and back with film equipment that was worth so much that it would have ruined us all financially. So he protected it with his life, and we are eternally grateful to him for that. Secondly, Luwi was working at 18frames.rentals at the time. Kudos to them for providing us with high-end equipment even though we couldn't afford it.

When Moritz arrived, we had already scouted out some locations and drawn up a rough plan of what we wanted to shoot over the next two days (and nights). You have to remember that we were shooting Dopamine and Ourcosm Pt. 1 at the same time. Working with only three people on set and a tight schedule, without perfect planning, without stable weather and without a budget had its disadvantages. So we decided to shoot all the performance footage as well as the beginning of the second verse and some additional scenes two months later in Germany, near Luwi's hometown.

We decided to get up very early to film the performance shots of the chorus at sunrise. Unfortunately, we arrived on time and set up, only to see an overcast sky. But luckily the sun eventually came out, resulting in the footage you see in the finished video.

Everything that was said about Dopamine could also be said here. The only real difference is that we managed to do all the shots except the first one in Sweden. Doesn't sound like much, does it? Did we mention that the first shot takes up about 1 minute and 20 seconds in the final cut, making up more than a third of the entire video?

That's why we got Tom and Freddy on board to help out Moritz and us. We recorded the scene in our apartment with a couple of friends who kindly agreed to play passed out and have a few drinks in between takes.

Our second video production started as an idea when Luwi visited his sister who was living in Malta for Christmas 2023. Within a month, we had everyone on board and a script prepared by Oisín. After arriving at our AirBnB, we spent two days intensively scouting locations. Luckily, our accommodation had a roof terrace where we shot our performances. Most of the other locations were alleyways nearby. The short distance to our base proved to be an important factor as we were on foot. Shooting at night in a tight time frame was exhausting, but we are happy with the results.

Another fortunate circumstance was to be able to do scenes in the house were Luwi’s sister lived, which had a great looking multi-story staircase. We were very grateful to be able to use the apartment for the shoot.
